The IMG guide to CaRMS: applying to residency in Canada

International medical graduates who want to train in Canada usually apply for residency through CaRMS, the Canadian Resident Matching Service. The pathway has more steps than most applicants expect, and requirements differ by province, so it pays to understand the shape of it early.

What CaRMS is

CaRMS runs the application and matching process for postgraduate medical training in Canada. Applicants submit documents through the CaRMS online system, programs invite candidates to interview, and both sides submit rank order lists that are matched by an algorithm.

Eligibility is set by provinces and programs

Each province and each program sets its own eligibility criteria for IMGs, which can include citizenship or permanent residency, exam results, language proficiency, and time since graduation. Some provinces also require a clinical assessment or have return of service agreements.

Check the current criteria for every province you plan to apply to before you register, as they can change between cycles.

Exams and credentials

Most IMGs need their medical degree verified and examination results recognized by the Medical Council of Canada before applying. Which exams are required, and when, depends on the province and program.

Documents programs review

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Personal letters tailored to each program or discipline
  • Reference letters
  • Medical school transcripts and performance records
  • Exam results and any required language test scores

Interviews and the match

Programs invite selected applicants to interview, and interview formats vary. After interviews, applicants and programs submit rank order lists, and match results are released on a published date each cycle.

Common mistakes IMGs make

  • Applying broadly without checking provincial eligibility first
  • Using the same personal letter for every program
  • Underestimating how long credential verification takes
  • Treating Canadian clinical exposure and references as optional when programs value them
