Medical school admissions in British Columbia

British Columbia has one medical school, in Vancouver. This page sets out how the province's process is structured. Requirements and seat allocations change between cycles, so confirm the current details on each school's own admissions page.

UBC

How you apply

UBC runs its own admissions portal rather than a shared provincial service. There is one medical school in the province, so a BC-focused application is a single, high-stakes submission.

In-province and out-of-province eligibility

UBC shows a strong preference for British Columbia residents, with a limited number of seats available to out-of-province applicants. Residency is therefore one of the first things to establish before planning a BC-only strategy.

What is specific to British Columbia

  • UBC's MD program is distributed across sites in the province, and applicants rank site preferences as part of the process.
  • Non-academic experiences are assessed through a structured written record with verifiers, so experience documentation matters as much as the writing itself.
  • With only one school in the province, most BC applicants also apply out of province, which means an OMSAS application on top of the UBC one.
